Abstract

The study was conducted on documentation of utilization of products of plant resources by local inhabitants of Achanakmar Amarkantak Biosphere Reserve (AABR) district Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh. Twenty six tree species were found in the study site and their products were collected and utilized for domestic and commercial purposes. Tree species come under sixteen families and the abundance of families of tree species were in the order of Anacardiaceae, Combretaceae and Euphorbiaceae. The study revealed that the demand for tree species like Buchanania lanzan (Char), Syzygium cumini (Jamun), Emblrea officinalis (Aonla), Aegle marmelos (Bael), Diospyros melanoxylon (Tendu) and Semecarpus anacardium (Bhelwa) etc. has alarmingly increased in the recent past due to their multiple uses and commercial exploitation. Few useful tree species such as Shorea rubusta (Sal), Terminalia alata (Saja), Madhuca indica (Mahua), Diosp yros melanoxylon (Tendu), T. chebula (Barra), T. beUirrea (Bahera), Cleistanthus collinus (Karra), Semecarpus anacardium (Bhelwa), Syzygium cumini (Jamun), Lannea coromandelrea (Gunja) and Anogeissus latifolia (Dhawra) are observed in the area. The study emphasized to conserve and domesticate these tree species for improving the livelihood oflocal inhabitants.

Abstract

Studies on the succession of various insect pollinators/ visitors on niger crop was undertaken during the Rabi 2011-12. Total 15 species of insect pollinators/ visitors were found visiting on niger flowers. Amongst the pollinators/visitors, Apis cerana indica appeared first on niger flower followed by Apis florea, Danaus chrysippus, Eristalis sp., Pelopidas mathias, Apis dorsata, Musca domestica, Nazara virudula, Dysdercus cingulatus, Leptocorisa acuta, Amata passelis, Chrysomya bezziana, Coccinella septumpunctata, Vespa cincta and sarcophaga sp. They were found visiting on niger flower throughout the bloomimg period.

Abstract

Host location and acceptance by egg parasitoids can be mediated by various allelochemicals. In this study, we tested the response of Trichogramma japonicum Ashmead to bioactive plant extracts of easily available plants against Scripophaga incertulas (Walker). An experiment was laid in free choice conditions at Raipur (Chhattisgarh agro-ecosystem) in randomized block design with seven treatments including control. There was continuous increment in parasitization by T. japanicum for up to 15 days. Parasitization T. japanicum was enhanced significantly in Tagetes erecta (Marigold) treated plots (48.5%) followed by Ocimum sanctum(Tulsi) (42.6%) and was minimum in Azadirachta indica (Neem) treated plots (18.8%). Tagetes erecta (Marigold) spray on rice crop elicited a positive response in spider population, with the highest average number of spiders (5.80), followed by control 3.66%. The other treatments showed repellent action on spider population.

Abstract

The foraging activity of Apis cerana indica was found higher in first week of November 2011 and 2^nd week of December 2012 (33.83 bees/5min/m²). Its maximum visitation was found at 1100hrs (66.06 bees/5min/m²). The maximum foraging activity of Apis dorsata was observed at 1100hrs (11.75 bees/5min/m²) whereas, the lowest was observed at 1700hrs (0.50 bee/5min/m²).The higher foraging activity of Apis florea was noticed at 1300hrs (4.00 bees/5min/m²) and was found least at 0900hrs (0.56 bee/5min/m²).

Abstract

The species Vespula flaviceps (Smith) belonging to subfamily Vespinae is a new record for the state Arunachal Pradesh. A total of 26 genera and 62 species of vespid wasps have been reported from the state. A distributional checklist along with brief diagnosis of V. flaviceps is provided.
